Pitch ranges are trade convention, not code. Code sets minimum slope by material, not by roof shape.
Is this your roof?
- The ridge is not in the middle — one plane runs much further down than the other.
- From the side the outline is visibly lopsided.
- The long slope usually covers a rear extension built under the same roofline.
In Johnson County
The practical Kansas issue is water volume, not the shape. The long slope collects a large area and delivers all of it to one gutter run. Undersized guttering there will overshoot in a heavy storm, which is what people usually describe as a roof leak when they call. The long slope also holds snow longer if it faces north, which raises ice dam risk at that eave.

The failure points that are specific to this shape, in the order a roofer looks at them.
- The gutter on the long slope, for capacity and for evidence of overshoot.
- The eave at the bottom of the long slope for ice dam damage, if it faces north.
- The ridge, which is conventional and should be treated as such.
- Any point where the long slope was extended over an addition, since that junction may be original framing meeting newer work.
What moves the price
Square footage is a poor predictor on its own. These are the things that actually change the number on this shape.
- The long slope means long runs and, in metal, long panels that may need special handling on site.
- Gutter capacity on the long side has to handle a much larger catchment than the short side.
- The asymmetry itself adds little cost in shingles — to a crew a saltbox installs like a gable.
- Any dormers in the long slope add valleys, as always.
Common questions
Is a saltbox roof harder to replace than a normal gable?
Not really. To a roofing crew a saltbox behaves like a gable with one long plane — the same two-plane logic, the same ridge, the same rake edges. The practical differences are handling long material runs and making sure the gutter on the long side is sized for the water it actually collects.
Why does the long side of my saltbox roof overflow the gutter?
Because it collects a much larger area than the short side but is often fitted with the same size gutter. In a Kansas downpour that gutter overshoots. The fix is sizing the gutter and downspouts to the actual catchment on that plane — usually larger gutter or more downspouts, rather than anything on the roof itself.
Are saltbox roofs common in Johnson County?
Not common, but they turn up — sometimes as a deliberate colonial-revival design, more often where a rear addition was built under a continued roofline and produced the shape by accident. We work on them regularly enough that they hold no surprises.
