    • Stand at the front of the house. If you see a triangle of siding or brick rising to a point under the roof edge, that is the gable end.
    • The ridge runs the full length of the house rather than stopping short of the ends.
    • A simple gable has only two roof planes, and gutters on only two sides.

Wind tunnel work found a hip roof cut worst-case peak suction by up to half compared with a gable, but that was measured at 4:12 and the advantage narrows as pitch increases.     1. Rake edges, first and always. If the starter course was skipped, the rake is where wind gets under the shingles.
    2. Ridge cap condition, and whether the caps are purpose-made or cut from field shingles.
    3. The gable end vent, if there is one, and whether it is being used as intake alongside a ridge vent, because that combination short-circuits attic airflow.
    4. Valley metal wherever a dormer or wing intersects.

    What moves the price

    Square footage is a poor predictor on its own. These are the things that actually change the number on this shape.

    • Fewest cut shingles of any shape, because a simple gable has no hips and often no valleys.
    • Two runs of gutter instead of four.
    • Rake edge length drives drip edge and starter course quantity, so a long narrow gable costs more per square than a square one.
    • Any dormer or intersecting wing turns a simple gable into a cross gable and adds valleys, which is where the price moves.

    Is a gable roof bad in high wind?

    Not inherently, but it is less forgiving of a bad installation than a hip roof. The gable end presents a large flat face to the wind and the rake edge is the first thing to lift if the starter course was skipped. A correctly started and fastened gable performs well in Kansas wind; in the failures we get called to, installation quality is usually the deciding factor rather than shape.

    What pitch is a typical gable roof in Johnson County?
