Dealing with insurance companies is nobody's idea of a good time. Most of the stress comes from not knowing the order things happen in. Once the sequence is clear, the process is a lot less intimidating, and you can see exactly which parts are yours and which parts are your insurer's.

Step 1: Document everything right away

When it is safe, photograph visible damage from the ground and save the date of the storm. The Kansas Department of Insurance advises reporting the damage to your insurer as soon as possible. Follow your policy's instructions and ask the insurer how to protect the property before permanent repairs begin.

Questions to ask about a storm claim

    1. 1ReportNotify your insurer promptly under the policy
    2. 2InspectionThe insurer decides what claim inspection it needs
    3. 3ExplanationAsk how roof value and depreciation apply. Ask how the deductible applies
    4. 4ConstructionAuthorize roof work through a separate written contract
    5. 5PaymentThe insurer explains any payment schedule or required documents

Your policy and insurer determine how the deductible applies. The written contract and final invoice should show the project cost truthfully.

Claim steps and payments vary by policy and insurer. A contractor can document the roof and invoice authorized work, but does not control coverage or settlement.

Step 2: Get a professional inspection before the adjuster shows up

MCO Roofing can inspect accessible roof areas and prepare photos with a written estimate. We can also take measurements. You can share that roofing documentation with your insurer and ask how it fits into the insurer's inspection process.

The insurer assigns the adjuster and evaluates the loss. A contractor's report describes the visible roof conditions and proposed construction scope. It does not determine what the policy covers or what the insurer will pay.

A roof report documents visible conditions and the contractor's proposed construction scope.

Step 3: Have your roofer meet the adjuster

If the homeowner and insurer permit it, MCO can attend the adjuster inspection and identify the roof areas shown in our report. We can also answer questions about materials or repair methods. The adjuster and insurer remain responsible for their own assessment and coverage decision. The insurer controls settlement.

You don't have to do this alone

MCO can prepare roof documentation, provide a written estimate, attend the inspection when permitted and keep you informed about the construction scope. You remain responsible for communicating with your insurer. Your policy and insurer determine coverage and settlement.
