5 Mistakes That Get Your Roof Insurance Claim Denied

We've helped hundreds of homeowners through the claims process, and the same five mistakes keep tripping people up. Every single one is avoidable once you know what to watch for.
1. Waiting too long to file
This is the big one. A hailstorm rolls through, and the homeowner doesn't get around to calling their insurance until four or five months later. By then, the damage has gotten worse from months of weather, and the insurance company says the current condition isn't consistent with the original storm event. Claim denied. Most policies want you to report damage promptly - within days, not months. The sooner you file, the cleaner the process.
2. Not documenting the damage
We talked about this in our hailstorm post, but it bears repeating. Photos from the day of the storm carry a lot of weight with insurance adjusters. Timestamped pictures of hail on the ground, visible damage to your property, weather reports - all of it helps prove your case. Without documentation, it becomes your word against the adjuster's assessment, and that's not a fight you want to be in.
3. Making temporary repairs the wrong way
If your roof is actively leaking, you're allowed - and expected - to do reasonable temporary repairs to prevent further damage. Tarping a section, putting a bucket under a drip, that kind of thing. What you don't want to do is start nailing new shingles over damaged ones or sealing things up before the adjuster has seen it. We've had homeowners patch a leak so well that the adjuster couldn't find the original damage. That's a problem. Protect your home, but don't hide the evidence.

4. Not having your roofer present for the adjuster visit
When the adjuster comes out, they're looking at your roof for maybe 30-45 minutes. They have a long list of claims to process and they're moving through them quickly. If nobody's there to point out damage or explain what they're looking at, things get missed. We meet with adjusters on behalf of our customers all the time. We walk the roof together, show them exactly what we found, and make sure the full scope of damage ends up in their report. It's not adversarial - it's just thorough.
5. Signing with an unlicensed contractor
After every big storm, out-of-state crews show up offering deals that sound too good. Some of them will ask you to sign a "contingency agreement" before the adjuster even comes out. That locks you into using them regardless of what happens with your claim. A legit local roofer won't pressure you like that. They'll inspect your roof, give you a report, help with the insurance process, and let you decide. If someone is pushing you to sign something in your driveway the day after a storm, walk away.
