You'd be surprised how fast a roof replacement goes when the crew knows what they're doing. Here's an honest timeline and what affects it.
This is one of the first questions every homeowner asks, and the answer is usually shorter than they expect. Most standard residential roofs, your typical 20 to 30 square ranch or two-story, take one to three days from start to finish. That includes tearing off the old roof, inspecting the decking, and installing everything new. A lot of straightforward jobs wrap up in a single day.
What makes a roof job go faster or slower
Roof size is the obvious one, a 15-square ranch house goes faster than a 40-square two-story. But complexity matters just as much. Steep pitches, lots of valleys, dormers, skylights, multiple chimneys, all of that adds time because the crew has to cut and fit around more obstacles. A simple hip roof goes up a lot quicker than a cut-up roof with seven different planes and a bunch of penetrations.

What to expect during the process
We usually show up early, our crews are on-site by 7 or 7:30 in the morning. The first thing that happens is the tear-off. Old shingles come off, they go into a dumpster we've already placed in the driveway. It's loud and messy, but it goes fast. Once the decking is exposed, we check for any soft spots or water damage. If there's rotten wood, we replace it right there. Then it's underlayment, ice and water shield in the valleys and around penetrations, and finally the shingles go on. By the end of the day, your yard gets a full cleanup. We run a magnet roller over the whole property to catch stray nails.
Weather is the one thing nobody controls. If a storm rolls in mid-job, we tarp everything up tight and come back when it clears. We never leave a roof exposed. And we always plan around the forecast. If there's rain coming Wednesday, we might start Thursday instead of trying to beat it.
